Biography
Early life
Akhilesh Yadav is the son of Mulayam Singh Yadav, three-time Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He studied at the Rashtriya Military School in Dholpur, earned an engineering degree from the University of Mysore and a master’s in environmental engineering from the University of Sydney.
Chief Minister
He entered the Lok Sabha from Kannauj in a 2000 by-election. As state president he led the Samajwadi Party’s cycle-yatra campaign to an absolute majority in the 2012 assembly election and became Chief Minister at 38. His government built the Agra–Lucknow Expressway, started the Lucknow Metro and distributed laptops to students.
Opposition leader
After a family feud he took over as SP national president in January 2017, but lost power to the BJP that year. He led the opposition in the state assembly from 2022. In the 2024 general election the SP won 37 of Uttar Pradesh’s 80 seats, becoming the third-largest party in the Lok Sabha, and Yadav returned to Parliament from Kannauj. His wife Dimple Yadav is MP for Mainpuri.
PDA strategy
For the 2024 general election Yadav built a coalition he called PDA — Pichhde (backward classes), Dalits and Alpsankhyak (minorities) — and allied with the Congress in the INDIA bloc. The SP’s 37 seats, its best ever, included the Faizabad (Ayodhya) seat, a symbolic victory.
Family politics
Akhilesh Yadav belongs to Uttar Pradesh’s most prominent political family: his father Mulayam Singh Yadav founded the Samajwadi Party in 1992 and was Chief Minister three times and Union Defence Minister. In 2016–17 a bitter feud between Akhilesh and his uncle Shivpal Yadav split the party, ending with Akhilesh taking over as national president. His wife Dimple Yadav and several cousins are also MPs.
