Biography
Beginnings
Anita Dongre grew up in Mumbai and spent summers in Rajasthan, where she was drawn to the colours and crafts of rural women. She studied fashion at SNDT Women’s University and started her business in 1995 with her sister, using two sewing machines.
Building brands
Her company launched the western-wear label AND, the Indo-western label Global Desi and her own Anita Dongre bridal and couture line. Together they made House of Anita Dongre one of India’s biggest fashion businesses.
Grassroot
In 2015 she launched Grassroot, a label working with artisan communities to revive crafts such as Gota Patti and hand-block printing, and committed her business to cruelty-free and sustainable practices.
International
During the British royal visit to India in 2016, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, wore an Anita Dongre dress, and in 2017 she opened a store in New York.
