Nayar grew up in a Gujarati family in Mumbai, where her father ran a small business. After an MBA at IIM Ahmedabad she worked at the consultancy A. F. Ferguson and then spent nearly two decades at Kotak Mahindra, rising to managing director of Kotak Mahindra Capital, its investment bank.
Founding Nykaa
In 2012, at 50, she left banking to start Nykaa, an online store for beauty products. She saw that Indian women had few places to buy authentic cosmetics with good advice, and built the business around a large range, content and tutorials.
Growth
Nykaa added physical stores and expanded into fashion and its own brands. It became profitable unusually early for an Indian internet company.
Listing
When Nykaa’s parent company FSN E-Commerce listed on the stock exchanges in November 2021, its shares nearly doubled on the first day, making Nayar India’s richest self-made woman at the time.
