Sudden succession
Kumar Mangalam Birla is the son of Aditya Vikram Birla and great-grandson of G. D. Birla. A chartered accountant with an MBA from the London Business School, he became chairman of the group in 1995 at 28, after his father died of cancer.
Global expansion
He restructured the group and led a series of acquisitions, including the aluminium maker Novelis in 2007, which made Hindalco one of the world’s largest aluminium rolling companies, and Larsen & Toubro’s cement business, which made UltraTech India’s largest cement company.
A wide conglomerate
Today the Aditya Birla Group spans metals, cement, textiles and fashion retail, chemicals, financial services and a stake in the telecom company Vodafone Idea. In 2023 it entered jewellery retail.
Other roles
Birla is chancellor of BITS Pilani and has chaired government committees on corporate governance. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2023.
