MS Dhoni is a wicketkeeper-batsman and the only captain to have won all three major ICC white-ball trophies: the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 Cricket World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy. He has led Chennai Super Kings to five IPL titles.

Biography

From Ranchi to India

Dhoni grew up in Ranchi, where he played football as a goalkeeper before taking up cricket. While playing first-class cricket he worked as a ticket collector for Indian Railways at Kharagpur. He made his ODI debut in December 2004 and became famous for his explosive hitting.

Captain Cool

Appointed captain for the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, he led a young side to the title. India became the top-ranked Test team under him in 2009, and in 2011 he hit the winning six in the World Cup final in Mumbai. The 2013 Champions Trophy completed a unique set of ICC trophies. He retired from international cricket in August 2020.

Chennai Super Kings

Dhoni has captained Chennai Super Kings to IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. He holds an honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army and was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2025.

Style

Dhoni was known for unorthodox but devastating batting — especially his “helicopter shot” — lightning-fast stumping and an unflappable calm under pressure that earned him the name Captain Cool. He was one of the best finishers in limited-overs cricket, often taking chases to the last over.

Personal life

He married Sakshi Rawat in 2010; their daughter Ziva was born in 2015. His life was dramatised in the biopic M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016). Outside cricket he is a keen motorcyclist and has interests in football and sports businesses.

Legacy

Dhoni is widely regarded as one of the greatest captains and finishers in the history of limited-overs cricket, and his journey from Ranchi — far from India’s traditional cricket centres — changed perceptions of where Indian cricketers could come from. His calm leadership style influenced a generation of players, and he remains one of India’s most marketable sporting figures.
