P. R. Sreejesh is a former India hockey goalkeeper and captain who helped India win Olympic bronze medals at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, ending a 41-year wait for an Olympic hockey medal. He now coaches India’s junior men’s team.
Biography
From Kerala
Sreejesh grew up in a farming family in Kerala, a state with little hockey tradition. He tried sprinting and other sports before a coach at the G. V. Raja Sports School in Thiruvananthapuram suggested he become a goalkeeper. He made his India debut in 2006.
Wall of India
He became India’s first-choice goalkeeper in the 2010s, helping win Asian Games gold in 2014 and captaining the team at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He was known for his reflexes, his leadership and his habit of sitting on the crossbar to celebrate.
Olympic medals
At the Tokyo Olympics, held in 2021, his saves helped India beat Germany for bronze — the country’s first Olympic hockey medal since 1980. He retired after the Paris 2024 Olympics, where India won bronze again, and Hockey India retired his No. 16 shirt for the senior team.
Honours
Sreejesh was named FIH Goalkeeper of the Year in 2021 and 2022 and received the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2021 and the Padma Bhushan in 2025. He became head coach of India’s junior men’s team after retiring.
