Biography
The Singh sisters
Prashanti Singh grew up in Varanasi as one of five sisters who all made their mark in basketball: Divya, Akanksha and Pratima Singh also played for India, and Priyanka Singh became a national coach. Together they are known as the Singh Sisters.
India captain
She joined the national team in 2002 and soon became captain. She led India to silver at the 2009 Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam and won gold at the 2011 South Asian Beach Games in Sri Lanka. She was the first Indian woman basketball player to play at a Commonwealth Games (2006) and two Asian Games (2010 and 2014).
Domestic record
Singh has won 22 medals across National Championships, National Games and Federation Cups, and holds the national record for most senior-level medals for a single state team. She was named MVP of the 2012 Mahindra NBA Challenge national final and was the top scorer, with 25.8 points per game, at the 2011 Federation Cup.
Advocacy for women’s sport
Singh has campaigned for better facilities and recognition for women athletes, especially in team sports such as basketball. Through talks, mentoring and her roles on national sports councils she has worked to improve talent identification for girls in smaller cities, drawing on her own experience growing up in Varanasi.
Honours and service
She received the Rani Laxmi Bai Award from Uttar Pradesh, the Arjuna Award in 2017 and the Padma Shri in 2019 — the first basketball player so honoured. She serves on the All India Council of Sports and the Khelo India talent identification committee, and her life is the subject of the documentary B Cube (Boskey Basketball Banaras).
