Rahul Bajaj was an industrialist who led Bajaj Auto from 1968 to 2005 and chaired it until 2021, turning it into one of the world’s largest two-wheeler makers. His Chetak scooter was a symbol of middle-class India. He died in 2022.
Biography
Scooters for India
He took charge of Bajaj Auto in 1968. In the era of industrial licensing, the company could make only limited numbers of scooters, and buyers waited years for a Bajaj Chetak. The scooter and the advertising slogan “Hamara Bajaj” (“Our Bajaj”) became part of Indian family life.
Outspoken
He was known for speaking frankly about government policy, both before and after liberalisation. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and died in Pune on 12 February 2022.
Family of freedom fighters
Rahul Bajaj was the grandson of Jamnalal Bajaj, a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, and Jawaharlal Nehru is said to have suggested his name. He studied economics in Delhi, law in Bombay and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Competing after liberalisation
After 1991, facing Japanese competition, Bajaj modernised and moved into motorcycles; under his son Rajiv the company became a leading motorcycle maker and exporter. Rahul Bajaj was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2006 to 2010.
