Satyendra Nath Bose was a physicist whose 1924 derivation of Planck’s radiation law, championed by Albert Einstein, founded Bose–Einstein statistics. The class of particles called bosons is named after him.

Biography

Early life

Bose was a brilliant student at Presidency College, Calcutta, where his classmates included the astrophysicist Meghnad Saha and his teachers included Jagadish Chandra Bose. He topped his BSc and MSc examinations and, with Saha, translated Einstein’s papers on relativity into English.

The paper to Einstein

Bose studied at Presidency College, Calcutta, and taught at the universities of Calcutta and Dhaka. In 1924, as a reader at Dhaka, he sent Albert Einstein a short paper deriving Planck’s law by treating photons as indistinguishable particles. Einstein translated it into German, arranged its publication and extended the idea, giving rise to Bose–Einstein statistics and the prediction of the Bose–Einstein condensate, first created in a laboratory in 1995.

Teacher and polymath

Bose was renowned as a teacher at Dhaka and Calcutta universities and championed science education in Bengali. He was a skilled esraj player and read widely in literature. Although his work underpins an entire class of particles, he never received a Nobel Prize, a gap often noted by historians of science. The S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences in Kolkata is named after him.

Later life

Bose spent two years in Europe working with Marie Curie’s laboratory and alongside Einstein, then returned to Dhaka and later Calcutta University. He was a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, received the Padma Vibhushan in 1954, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1958 and was named a National Professor. He died in Calcutta on 4 February 1974.

Legacy

Bosons — the class of particles including photons and the Higgs boson — carry Bose’s name, and the Bose–Einstein condensate predicted from his work was created in the laboratory in 1995, winning the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics for others. Bose is celebrated in India as a symbol of fundamental science done on Indian soil.
