Syed Abdul Rahim was India’s national football coach from 1950 until his death in 1963, a period often called the golden age of Indian football. Under him India won two Asian Games gold medals and reached the semi-finals of the 1956 Olympics. He died in 1963.
Biography
Teacher and player
Rahim was a schoolteacher in Hyderabad who played football for local clubs and closely followed European coaching methods. He became coach of the Hyderabad City Police team, which he turned into one of the strongest clubs in India.
National coach
Appointed India coach in 1950, he modernised the team’s tactics, introducing a 4-2-4 formation and insisting on fitness and discipline. India won the first Asian Games football gold in New Delhi in 1951.
Melbourne and Jakarta
At the 1956 Melbourne Olympics India beat the hosts Australia 4–2 — Neville D’Souza scored a hat-trick — and reached the semi-finals, still the best Olympic result by an Asian football team at the time. In 1962, already ill with cancer, Rahim guided India to Asian Games gold in Jakarta, beating South Korea in the final.
Legacy
He died of cancer on 11 June 1963. Indian football has never since matched the success of his era. His life was told in the Hindi film Maidaan (2024), with Ajay Devgn as Rahim.
