Anil Kumble is a former India leg-spinner and captain who took 619 Test wickets, the most by an Indian bowler. In 1999 he became only the second bowler to take all ten wickets in a Test innings. He later coached the Indian team.
Biography
Engineer and leg-spinner
Kumble studied mechanical engineering in Bangalore while building his cricket career. Unlike most leg-spinners, he bowled fast and relied on accuracy, bounce and a sharp top-spinner rather than big turn, making him deadly on Indian pitches.
Perfect ten
Against Pakistan in Delhi in 1999 he took all ten wickets in an innings for 74 runs, a feat achieved before only by England’s Jim Laker in 1956. In 2002 in Antigua he famously bowled with his broken jaw strapped up, dismissing Brian Lara.
Captain
Kumble captained India in 14 Tests in 2007–08, including the tense 2008 tour of Australia, where he was praised for his dignity during a controversial Sydney Test. He retired in 2008 with 619 Test wickets and 337 in one-day internationals.
After playing
He has served as chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee, head coach of India in 2016–17 and coach or mentor of IPL teams. He received the Padma Shri in 2005 and was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2015.
