Arijit Singh is a playback singer from West Bengal who has become the defining voice of Hindi film music since the 2010s. He has won two National Film Awards and is one of the most-streamed artists in the world.

Biography

Early life

Singh grew up in Jiaganj in a family with a musical background and trained in Hindustani classical music and tabla. He took part in the television talent show Fame Gurukul in 2005 and spent several years working as a music programmer and assistant to composers in Mumbai.

Rise to fame

His first released Hindi film song was “Phir Mohabbat” from Murder 2 (2011), and “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2 (2013) made him a star. Hits including “Channa Mereya”, “Agar Tum Saath Ho” and “Kesariya” followed.

He won National Film Awards for “Binte Dil” (Padmaavat) and “Kesariya” (Brahmāstra), was awarded the Padma Shri in 2025, and has among the largest followings of any artist on Spotify. Known for his low-key lifestyle, he continues to live in Jiaganj.

Style

Arijit Singh’s soft, emotive voice and classical grounding made him the preferred singer for romantic and melancholic songs in Hindi cinema from 2013 onwards. He has sung in Bengali, Telugu, Marathi and other languages, works as a composer and music producer, and has performed sold-out arena concerts in India and abroad, including at Wembley in London.

Low-key star

Unusually for a star, Singh avoids publicity and lives in his hometown of Jiaganj in West Bengal, where he has been known to ride a scooter around town. He has won numerous Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer.

Style and influence

Singh’s soft, emotive voice made him the dominant voice of Hindi film romance in the 2010s and 2020s; he has been among the most-streamed artists on Spotify worldwide. Known for his low-key personal life, he lives in his hometown of Jiaganj in West Bengal rather than Mumbai.
