Biography
Early life
Mukesh Ambani was born in Aden, where his father was then working, and grew up in a two-room flat in Mumbai’s Bhuleshwar before Reliance’s success. He studied at Hill Grange High School and the Institute of Chemical Technology, and was pulled out of his Stanford MBA by his father to help build Reliance’s polyester plant at Patalganga.
Reliance
The elder son of Reliance founder Dhirubhai Ambani, Mukesh studied chemical engineering at the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, and left an MBA at Stanford to join the family business in 1981. He led the building of large petrochemical plants and the refinery at Jamnagar, now the world’s largest single-site refining complex. After his father’s death in 2002 he became chairman, and in 2005 the group was divided between him and his brother Anil.
Jio and retail
In 2016 Reliance launched the Jio mobile network with free voice calls and cheap data, which drove a dramatic rise in mobile internet use in India and made Jio the country’s largest telecom operator. Reliance Retail grew into India’s biggest retailer. The family owns the IPL team Mumbai Indians. His wife Nita Ambani is a philanthropist and IOC member; their children Akash, Isha and Anant hold senior roles in the group. Critics have raised concerns about the concentration of economic power.
Expanding Reliance
Under Mukesh Ambani, Reliance has moved into green energy, announcing giga-factories for solar panels, batteries and hydrogen at Jamnagar, and into media and entertainment through Viacom18 and its merger with Disney’s India business in 2024. Jio Platforms raised billions of dollars from investors including Facebook (Meta) and Google in 2020.
Family and public life
His home, Antilia, a 27-storey building in south Mumbai, is one of the world’s most expensive private residences. The 2024 wedding of his son Anant Ambani to Radhika Merchant drew global celebrities and heads of business. He has received the Asia Society’s leadership award and has been a member of global business advisory bodies.
