Biography

Early life

Ratan Tata was raised by his grandmother after his parents separated. He studied architecture at Cornell University and joined the Tata Group in 1961, starting on the shop floor at Tata Steel in Jamshedpur.

Early challenges

In his early years at the group he was given responsibility for struggling companies, including the electronics firm Nelco and the textile mill Empress Mills. When J. R. D. Tata chose him as successor in 1991 — the same year India began liberalising its economy — many doubted him. He restructured the loosely held group, introduced a retirement age for company heads and gave Tata Sons greater control over its companies.

Chairman of Tata Sons

Succeeding J. R. D. Tata as chairman in 1991, he consolidated the group and took it global: Tata Tea bought Tetley (2000), Tata Steel acquired Corus (2007) and Tata Motors bought Jaguar Land Rover (2008). He championed the Tata Indica, India’s first indigenously developed car, and the low-cost Tata Nano. He retired in 2012, returning briefly as interim chairman in 2016–17.

Character and public image

Ratan Tata was widely admired for his modesty, integrity and compassion; stories of his concern for employees after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks on the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, and of his love for animals — stray dogs were sheltered at Bombay House, the group’s headquarters — made him one of India’s most loved public figures. A licensed pilot, he flew an F-16 at an air show in 2007. His death in October 2024 led to an outpouring of tributes, and he was given a state funeral.

Philanthropy and legacy

Two-thirds of Tata Sons is owned by charitable trusts, and as chairman of the Tata Trusts he directed support to health, education and research. In retirement he invested in many Indian start-ups. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. He died in Mumbai on 9 October 2024.
