Satyajit Ray was a Bengali film director, writer, illustrator and composer, widely regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers in world cinema. His debut Pather Panchali (1955) brought Indian art cinema international recognition. He received an honorary Academy Award and the Bharat Ratna in 1992.
Biography
Pather Panchali
Inspired partly by Italian neorealism, Ray made Pather Panchali (1955) on a tiny budget with amateur actors, pawning his wife’s jewellery to keep going. The film, about a poor family in rural Bengal, won a special prize at Cannes in 1956. Its sequels Aparajito (1956), which won the Golden Lion at Venice, and Apur Sansar (1959) completed the Apu Trilogy.
A body of work
Ray made 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. Among them are Jalsaghar (1958), Charulata (1964), based on a Tagore story, the children’s musical Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (1969), the Calcutta trilogy of the 1970s and Shatranj Ke Khilari (1977), his first Hindi film. He usually wrote his own scripts, composed the music and designed the posters.
A creative family
Ray was born into a distinguished Bengali family: his grandfather Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury was a writer and printing pioneer, and his father Sukumar Ray a celebrated writer of nonsense verse. He studied economics in Calcutta and art at Rabindranath Tagore’s university in Santiniketan, then worked as a graphic designer at an advertising agency, designing book covers.
Writer and legacy
Ray also created the detective Feluda and the scientist Professor Shonku in books still loved by Bengali readers. He received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1984, the French Legion of Honour, an honorary Academy Award in 1992 — accepted from his hospital bed — and the Bharat Ratna. He died in Calcutta on 23 April 1992.
Why they matter
Satyajit Ray is still the Indian filmmaker most studied around the world. Pather Panchali proved that Indian cinema could be quiet, observant and universal at a time when Indian films abroad were known mainly for song and dance. Directors from Martin Scorsese to Wes Anderson have cited his influence. Within India, his work laid the foundations of the parallel cinema movement, and his Feluda stories and illustrations made him a cultural figure in Bengal far beyond film.
