Sushmita Sen is an actress who in 1994 became the first Indian to win the Miss Universe title. She has acted in Hindi films such as Biwi No.1 and Main Hoon Na and led the acclaimed streaming series Aarya.
Biography
Early life
Sushmita Sen was born in Hyderabad to a Bengali family; her father, Shubeer Sen, was an Indian Air Force wing commander, and her mother, Subhra Sen, a jewellery designer. She grew up in Delhi and other cities, and was 18 when she won Miss Universe.
Miss Universe
Sen won the Femina Miss India title in 1994, ahead of Aishwarya Rai, and went on to become Miss Universe 1994 in Manila — the first Indian to win the title.
Acting career
She debuted in Dastak (1996) and won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for Biwi No.1 (1999). Other films include Main Hoon Na (2004) and Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? (2005). After a break, she returned with the Disney+ Hotstar crime series Aarya (2020–24), which earned an International Emmy nomination. She adopted her daughters Renee and Alisah as a single mother.
Motherhood and comeback
Sen adopted her daughter Renee in 2000, aged 24, after a legal battle, and later adopted Alisah in 2010 — becoming a well-known advocate of adoption and single motherhood. After a break from films, her performance as Aarya Sareen, a mother forced into the drug trade, in the series Aarya revived her career and earned an International Emmy nomination for the show.
Public image
Sen is admired for her candour and independence, speaking openly about single motherhood, adoption, health and relationships. In 2014 she was diagnosed with Addison’s disease, which she later said she managed through training and discipline, and in 2023 she survived a heart attack, after which she encouraged women to take heart health seriously. Her daughter Renee has also begun acting.
