Shah Rukh Khan is a Hindi film actor and producer whose romantic roles of the 1990s made him one of the most popular film stars in the world. He co-owns Red Chillies Entertainment and the Kolkata Knight Riders cricket team.
Biography
Early life
Khan grew up in Delhi, where he studied economics at Hansraj College and was active in theatre under director Barry John. He lost both parents by his mid-twenties and moved to Bombay in 1991.
From television to King of Romance
He first became known through the television series Fauji (1989) and Circus. His film debut came in Deewana (1992), followed by anti-hero roles in Baazigar and Darr (1993). Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) — which ran in a Mumbai cinema for more than two decades — cemented his image as the romantic hero, followed by Dil To Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Devdas.
Later he showed range in Swades (2004), Chak De! India (2007) and My Name Is Khan (2010).
Producer, businessman and comeback
Khan co-founded Red Chillies Entertainment and the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, which won the title in 2012, 2014 and 2024. After a lean spell, he returned in 2023 with Pathaan and Jawan, both among the highest-grossing Hindi films ever. He won his first National Film Award for Best Actor for Jawan in 2025.
Global star
Khan’s films have been major hits among the South Asian diaspora and in markets from the Middle East to Germany, and he is often described as one of the biggest film stars in the world. He has spoken at the World Economic Forum, received the WEF’s Crystal Award in 2018 for his work for women and children through the Meer Foundation, and been honoured by France with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the Legion of Honour.
Personal life
Khan married Gauri Chibber in 1991 after a long courtship; she is now an interior designer and film producer. They have three children: Aryan, Suhana and AbRam. Their sea-facing home in Bandra, Mannat, is one of Mumbai’s best-known landmarks, where fans gather on his birthday and on Eid.
