Aamir Khan is a Hindi film actor, director and producer known for carefully chosen, socially conscious films. His productions include Lagaan, nominated for an Academy Award, and Dangal, the highest-grossing Indian film worldwide.
Biography
Early career
Born into a film family — his father Tahir Hussain was a producer and his uncle Nasir Hussain a director — Khan appeared as a child actor in Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973). His adult breakthrough was the romance Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), followed by hits such as Dil, Raja Hindustani and Sarfarosh.
Mr. Perfectionist
In 2001 he produced and starred in Lagaan, a period sports drama nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and starred in Dil Chahta Hai. He then chose to make roughly one film a year, including Rang De Basanti (2006), his directorial debut Taare Zameen Par (2007), 3 Idiots (2009), PK (2014) and Dangal (2016), which became a phenomenon in China as well as India.
Beyond films
Khan hosted the television series Satyamev Jayate (2012–14) on social issues and co-founded the Paani Foundation, which works on drought relief in Maharashtra. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2010.
Working method
Khan earned the nickname “Mr. Perfectionist” for working on one project at a time, involving himself in scripts, casting and marketing, and for dramatic physical transformations — gaining weight to play the middle-aged wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat in Dangal and then losing it to play his younger self. His production house, Aamir Khan Productions, launched with Lagaan in 2001.
Social causes
Satyamev Jayate (2012–14), his television series on issues such as female foeticide, child abuse and dowry, was broadcast simultaneously on public and private channels and led to policy discussions. He has served as a UNICEF ambassador for child nutrition, and the Paani Foundation, which he co-founded with Kiran Rao in 2016, runs the Satyamev Jayate Water Cup, a competition that has helped thousands of Maharashtra villages tackle drought.
