Deepika Padukone is one of the highest-paid actresses in India, known for films such as Piku, Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat. She founded the Live Love Laugh Foundation to promote mental-health awareness and was named among Time’s 100 most influential people in 2018.
Biography
Early life
The daughter of badminton champion Prakash Padukone, she was born in Copenhagen and raised in Bangalore, where she played badminton at national level before turning to modelling.
Film career
After a Kannada debut in Aishwarya (2006), she starred opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om (2007). Success followed with Cocktail, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Chennai Express, and she became Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s lead in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013), Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Padmaavat (2018). Her Hollywood debut came in xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017). Later hits include Pathaan (2023) and Kalki 2898 AD (2024).
Advocacy
In 2015 she spoke publicly about her own experience of depression and founded the Live Love Laugh Foundation. She was a presenter at the 2023 Academy Awards. She married actor Ranveer Singh in 2018; their daughter was born in 2024.
Leading lady
After Om Shanti Om, Padukone faced a run of mixed results before 2013 transformed her career: Race 2, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express and Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela were all major hits. Her performances as the queen Mastani in Bajirao Mastani and Rani Padmavati in Padmaavat cemented her as one of Hindi cinema’s top stars, and she became one of its highest-paid actresses. She launched her production company, Ka Productions, with Chhapaak (2020), in which she played an acid-attack survivor.
Global presence
Padukone has been a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival (2022), unveiled the FIFA World Cup trophy at the 2022 final in Qatar, and presented at the 2023 Academy Awards. She has been a brand ambassador for global luxury houses.
Mental health advocacy
In 2015 Padukone spoke publicly about her struggle with depression, rare for an Indian celebrity at the time, and founded the Live Love Laugh Foundation to raise awareness of mental illness. She has since become one of the most prominent voices on mental health in India and has been recognised by the World Economic Forum for her work.
