Maharana Pratap was the Rajput ruler of Mewar from 1572 until his death in 1597, famous for refusing to accept Mughal overlordship. He fought the Mughal army at the Battle of Haldighati in 1576 and continued a long guerrilla resistance, recovering much of his kingdom.
Biography
Heir of Mewar
Pratap was the eldest son of Udai Singh II of Mewar, whose capital, Chittorgarh, was captured by Akbar in 1568. He became ruler in 1572 and refused repeated Mughal offers to submit, while many other Rajput rulers became Mughal allies.
Haldighati
On 18 June 1576 Pratap’s army fought a much larger Mughal force led by Man Singh of Amber at the narrow pass of Haldighati. The Mughals held the field, but Pratap escaped to continue the fight. Legend says his horse Chetak, though wounded, carried him to safety before dying.
Resistance
Pratap and his followers lived in the Aravalli hills and forests, supported by the Bhil tribes, and raided Mughal outposts. In his later years, as Akbar’s attention turned elsewhere, he recovered much of Mewar, though not Chittor, and established a new capital at Chavand.
Legacy
Pratap died at Chavand on 19 January 1597. He is celebrated in Rajasthan and across India as a symbol of courage and independence, with memorials at Haldighati and statues in many cities.
