Sushant Singh Rajput was a Hindi film actor who rose from television to film stardom. After his debut in Kai Po Che!, he played cricketer MS Dhoni in M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story and starred in the hit Chhichhore. He died in Mumbai in June 2020, aged 34.
Biography
Patna to Delhi
Sushant Singh Rajput was born in Patna, the youngest of five children and the only son of Krishna Kumar Singh and Usha Singh. He studied in Patna and Delhi, won a national physics olympiad and enrolled in mechanical engineering at the Delhi College of Engineering. While studying, he joined Shiamak Davar’s dance classes and Barry John’s acting workshops, and in 2006 he left his engineering course in its final year to pursue performing.
Television
In Mumbai he joined Nadira Babbar’s theatre group Ekjute and worked as a background dancer before landing a role in the television series Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil (2008). His lead role as Manav in Ekta Kapoor’s Pavitra Rishta (2009–2011) made him a household name, and he was runner-up on the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa in 2011.
Film career
He left television for films and made his debut in Abhishek Kapoor’s Kai Po Che! (2013), based on a Chetan Bhagat novel, winning several best debut awards. He went on to play the detective in Dibakar Banerjee’s Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (2015) and cricketer MS Dhoni in Neeraj Pandey’s M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016), one of the year’s biggest hits. Later films include Kedarnath (2018), the dacoit drama Sonchiriya (2019) and Nitesh Tiwari’s Chhichhore (2019), which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.
Interests
Rajput was known for his interest in astronomy and physics. He owned a powerful telescope, often shared posts about science and books, and visited NASA in 2017 to prepare for a planned space film that was never made. In 2018 he donated to relief work after the Kerala floods, and in early 2020 he set up a foundation focused on education and social causes.
Death and investigations
Rajput died at his home in Mumbai on 14 June 2020, aged 34. His death led to investigations by the Mumbai Police, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Enforcement Directorate and the Narcotics Control Bureau, and to intense media coverage. A forensic panel from AIIMS, New Delhi, concluded in 2020 that he had died by suicide, and in March 2025 the CBI filed a closure report ruling out foul play. His family has challenged the report in court. His final film, Dil Bechara, was released on streaming in July 2020.
