Amit Shah is India’s Minister of Home Affairs and its first Minister of Cooperation. A close associate of Narendra Modi, he was BJP president from 2014 to 2020, when the party expanded across India, and is widely regarded as its chief strategist.
Biography
Early career
Shah grew up in Gujarat and studied biochemistry at C. U. Shah Science College in Ahmedabad. He joined the RSS student wing ABVP as a young man and worked in the family’s business before becoming a full-time BJP organiser. He managed several of L. K. Advani’s campaigns in Gandhinagar.
Gujarat
Elected to the Gujarat assembly in 1997, Shah held the home portfolio as Minister of State in Narendra Modi’s state government. In 2010 he was arrested in a case concerning the alleged fake encounter killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and resigned; a CBI court discharged him in 2014.
National role
As the BJP general secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh he oversaw the party’s sweep of the state in 2014, and he became party president that July. Under his leadership the BJP won power in a string of states and grew its membership enormously.
Shah entered the Lok Sabha from Gandhinagar in 2019 and became Home Minister. He piloted the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in 2019, and the replacement of colonial-era criminal codes with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and related laws, which took effect in 2024. Since 2021 he has also led the new Ministry of Cooperation.
Party organiser
As BJP president, Shah introduced a massive membership drive that the party says made it the largest political party in the world by membership, built booth-level organisation in states where it had been weak, and oversaw victories in states such as Uttar Pradesh (2017), Assam and Tripura, while losing others including Delhi and Bihar in 2015.
Home Ministry record
As Home Minister, Shah has overseen internal security, the restructuring of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories in 2019, policing of the Naxalite insurgency with a stated aim of ending it, and the replacement of the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and Indian Evidence Act with new laws in 2024. He has become the longest-serving Home Minister in India’s history. Critics accuse him of using central agencies against opponents, which he denies.
