Narendra Modi is the 14th Prime Minister of India, in office since May 2014 and re-elected in 2019 and 2024. A long-time RSS worker and BJP leader, he was Chief Minister of Gujarat for nearly 13 years before leading his party to national power.
Biography
Early life
Modi was born in Vadnagar in north Gujarat, the third of six children in a family of modest means; as a boy he helped his father sell tea at the local railway station. He was married in his teens to Jashodaben, but left home soon afterwards and travelled for several years.
He became a full-time worker (pracharak) of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in the early 1970s and was active against the Emergency. He later completed a BA through distance education from the University of Delhi and an MA in political science from Gujarat University.
Chief Minister of Gujarat
Modi was deputed from the RSS to the BJP in 1987 and rose through its organisation, becoming national general secretary. In October 2001 he was appointed Chief Minister of Gujarat and went on to win three state elections.
Within months of taking office, communal riots in Gujarat in 2002 left more than a thousand people dead, and his government was criticised for failing to stop the violence. A Special Investigation Team appointed by the Supreme Court found no evidence to prosecute him, a conclusion the court upheld in 2022. His later terms focused on industrial investment, infrastructure and the “Vibrant Gujarat” summits.
Prime Minister
As the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, Modi led the party to the first single-party majority in three decades in 2014, winning from Varanasi, and increased that majority in 2019. In 2024 the BJP fell short of a majority on its own but the National Democratic Alliance retained power, and he was sworn in for a third term.
His governments have launched programmes including Jan Dhan bank accounts, Swachh Bharat (Clean India), Digital India and the Ayushman Bharat health scheme, carried out demonetisation of high-value notes in 2016, introduced the Goods and Services Tax in 2017 and revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special constitutional status in 2019. Supporters credit him with infrastructure growth and a stronger global profile; critics point to rising majoritarianism and pressure on dissent and the press.
Style and communication
Modi is known for direct communication with citizens through his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, launched in 2014, and a very large social-media following. His slogan “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” (together with all, development for all) has been a theme of his governments.
Foreign policy
Modi has travelled extensively abroad and cultivated personal ties with world leaders. His governments pursued the “Neighbourhood First” and “Act East” policies, deepened partnerships with the United States, Japan, Australia and the Gulf states through groupings such as the Quad, and maintained ties with Russia. India’s G20 presidency in 2023 was marked by the admission of the African Union as a permanent member.
Personal life
Modi was married as a teenager to Jashodaben in an arranged marriage but left home soon afterwards; he acknowledged the marriage publicly in 2014. He is known for his disciplined routine, practice of yoga — he championed the UN’s International Day of Yoga, first held on 21 June 2015 — and his distinctive half-sleeved kurtas. He has written books including Exam Warriors for students.
