Salman Khan is one of Hindi cinema’s most commercially successful stars, known for romantic hits in the 1990s and action blockbusters such as Dabangg, Ek Tha Tiger and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. He has hosted the reality show Bigg Boss since 2010.
Biography
Early life and debut
Salman Khan is the eldest son of screenwriter Salim Khan, one half of the writing duo Salim–Javed. After a small role in Biwi Ho To Aisi (1988), he played the lead in Sooraj Barjatya’s Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), a huge hit that won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.
Romantic hero of the 1990s
Barjatya’s family drama Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994) became one of the most successful Hindi films ever made. Other popular films of the decade include Karan Arjun (1995), Judwaa (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999).
Action blockbusters
From 2010, Dabangg reinvented him as a swaggering action star, followed by hits such as Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Sultan (2016) and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017). Bajrangi Bhaijaan, about a man who helps a mute Pakistani girl return home, is often cited as his most affecting film.
Television, charity and controversy
He has hosted Bigg Boss since its fourth season in 2010 and founded the charity Being Human in 2007, which funds education and healthcare and sells branded clothing. His career has also been marked by legal cases, including a 1998 blackbuck-poaching case in which he was convicted in 2018 and granted bail pending appeal, and a 2002 hit-and-run case in which the Bombay High Court acquitted him in 2015.
Why they matter
Salman Khan is the clearest example of star power in Hindi cinema: for more than a decade his films opened to huge crowds largely regardless of reviews. His career has two distinct peaks — the romantic hero of Sooraj Barjatya’s family dramas in the 1990s and the larger-than-life action star after Dabangg in 2010. Through Bigg Boss he has also become one of the most-watched faces on Indian television. His charity Being Human pioneered the idea of a celebrity merchandise brand that funds philanthropy.
