Bhuvan Bam is a comedian, singer and actor from Delhi who became one of India’s first YouTube stars with BB Ki Vines, in which he plays a whole cast of characters himself. He has since moved into streaming series as a producer and lead actor.
Biography
Early life
Bhuvan Bam was born in Vadodara, Gujarat, into a Marathi family that later moved to Delhi. He went to Green Fields School and took a history degree from Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, University of Delhi, and sang in restaurants before his online career took off.
BB Ki Vines
His first viral video mocked a TV reporter’s insensitive questions to a woman whose son died in the Kashmir floods. Encouraged, he started the YouTube channel BB Ki Vines in June 2015. Shot on a phone’s front camera, its short sketches show an urban teenager’s conversations with friends and family — all played by Bam himself, as characters such as Banchoddas, Sameer Fuddi, Titu Mama, Babloo, Janki and Mr. Hola. It became one of the most-subscribed independent channels in India.
Music, talk shows and acting
Bam has released original songs including “Teri Meri Kahani”, “Safar”, “Rahguzaar” and “Ajnabee”. His short film Plus Minus (2018), with Divya Dutta, won him a Filmfare short film award. In his talk show Titu Talks he interviews guests in character as Titu Mama — Shah Rukh Khan was the first. He produced and starred in the YouTube series Dhindora (2021) and led the Disney+ Hotstar series Taaza Khabar (2023).
Influence
Bam is widely seen as one of the pioneers of Indian YouTube comedy who proved that independent creators could build audiences rivalling mainstream entertainment. His move from phone-shot sketches to producing and starring in professional streaming series traced the path of the Indian creator economy, and he has used his platform to promote original Hindi music and to highlight the lives of ordinary workers in episodes such as Titu Talks’ “Lifeline of Society”.
